If air pollution makes your asthma worse, you may have wondered whether wearing a mask can actually help.

The short answer is: sometimes, yes. It depends on what is triggering your asthma.

Some common triggers are particles in the air, such as pollution, smoke, pollen, dust and mould spores. These are the things a good particle filter can help keep out. Other triggers, such as ozone, chemical fumes, cold air or exercise, are different. A particle filter cannot simply remove all of them.

Understanding that difference is probably the most useful thing you can do before deciding whether a mask is worth wearing.

Which asthma triggers can a mask filter?

Here is the simple version:

The important distinction is between particles and gases. A particle filter can be very good at removing particles from the air, but that does not make it a general-purpose filter for everything that can trigger asthma.

If air pollution is one of your triggers, the next question is what kind of pollution you are dealing with. Here is a closer look.

Asthma triggers and air pollution

Air pollution is a broad term. It can contain fine particles such as PM2.5 and soot, as well as gases such as ozone and nitrogen dioxide.

For someone whose asthma is sensitive to polluted air, that distinction matters. A particle respirator can reduce the amount of particulate matter you breathe, but it does not remove every pollutant in the air.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America cites research linking high-pollution days with increased asthma problems. In one study of young campers with moderate to severe asthma, acute episodes were more common on high-pollution summer days than on average days.

This is why people who know that traffic pollution or smoke triggers their asthma may choose to wear a particle-filtering mask when exposure is difficult to avoid.

Totobobo’s F96 filter was measured by Nelson Labs at 99.86% filtration of 0.1-micron particles. In a Queen Mary University of London roadside test, the Totobobo filter reduced black carbon by 71%, the highest reduction among the five masks tested. The test was carried out using a sealed-spacer method, so the result relates to the filter material under those test conditions rather than the fit of the mask on an individual face.

There are two important limitations to remember. A particle filter does not remove gases such as ozone or nitrogen dioxide, and even a highly efficient filter is less useful if the mask leaks around your face.

Pollen and allergic asthma

If pollen is one of your asthma triggers, a particle filter can be useful because pollen grains are much larger than PM2.5 particles. Typical pollen grains are roughly 10 to 100 microns in size.

So the problem is not really whether the filter is fine enough to catch pollen. A filter designed to capture fine particles can capture pollen too.

The harder part is often remembering to wear the mask before exposure starts. Pollen levels can be high when you are outdoors, gardening, exercising or simply walking around during the pollen season.

Some Totobobo customers have bought the mask specifically because grass, tree, weed or other pollen triggers their asthma or allergies. One parent in Arizona, for example, wanted his son to be able to play baseball without becoming unwell afterwards.

Dust: cleaning, woodworking and construction

Dust is another broad category. House dust can contain dust-mite allergens, while sawdust, construction dust and fine particles from hobbies can irritate the airways in other ways.

If dust is one of your triggers, the exposure may be surprisingly short. You might be fine most of the day and then start coughing or wheezing after vacuuming, sanding, cutting wood or walking past a dusty building site.

That makes having a mask available more useful than having one stored away somewhere. A mask cannot help if you only remember it after the exposure has started.

One Canadian hobbyist with asthma told us that fine sawdust from his scroll saw could trigger his symptoms, while a disposable mask had not worked well enough for him. His experience is only one person’s experience, but it is a good example of why fit matters as much as the filter itself.

Totobobo folds relatively flat, which makes it easier to carry in a pocket or bag and have available when a dusty situation comes up.

Mould and asthma: one doctor’s experience

Mould spores are particles, typically around 2 to 10 microns in size, so they are within the range that a particle filter can capture.

Dr Anil Simhadri, a London physician who has had asthma since childhood and has used Totobobo since 2010, discovered this in a very practical way while cleaning his bathroom.

I had a classic case of not using my Totobobo mask over the weekend when cleaning and started developing asthma symptoms. I had to clean our bathroom because mould was developing on the walls. I decided to use a very mild bleach solution to scrub the bathroom to remove the mould. I started this process without a mask and unfortunately within about half an hour started developing some wheezing symptoms.

Then I started to don the mask and things started to improve within the next half an hour. You never know what different situations your mask will be useful in. This is why I always carry one in my coat pocket wherever I go.

There is an important detail in this story. Dr Simhadri was cleaning with bleach as well as dealing with mould. A particle filter can capture mould spores, but it does not remove bleach fumes or other chemical gases.

So if you are cleaning mould, ventilation and safe handling of cleaning products still matter. A mask should not be treated as protection from chemical fumes simply because it filters particles.

Cold air can trigger asthma too

Cold, dry air is different from pollution, pollen or mould. There are no particles for the filter to remove.

But a close-fitting mask can still be useful for some people because it holds some of the warmth and moisture from your exhaled breath. The air you breathe back in can therefore be warmer and more humid than the cold, dry air outside.

This can be particularly relevant if your symptoms are triggered by cold winter air or strong air conditioning.

It is worth remembering that this is not a filtration effect. If cold air is your trigger, the benefit comes from changing the temperature and humidity of the air you inhale, not from removing a pollutant.

What a particle mask cannot do

This is just as important as knowing what a mask can do.

  • It does not treat asthma. Keep taking your prescribed medication and follow the asthma plan agreed with your doctor.
  • It does not remove gases. Particle filters do not remove ozone, nitrogen dioxide, bleach fumes, paint fumes or other chemical vapours.
  • It does not prevent every asthma trigger. Exercise, stress and some infections are not simply particles in the air.
  • It cannot compensate for a poor fit. If air comes around the edges of the mask, some of the air you breathe will not have passed through the filter.
  • It is not a substitute for fixing the source. If a room has mould, smoke or another indoor pollution problem, removing the source and improving ventilation or room filtration are important longer-term measures.

There is also an individual difference worth mentioning. Some people with asthma are sensitive to warm or humid air. If that describes you, a mask that warms and humidifies your inhaled air may not feel comfortable. Try it for shorter periods and pay attention to how you respond.

So, when is a mask worth wearing?

A simple way to think about it is this:

  • If pollution, smoke, pollen, dust or mould spores trigger your asthma, a well-fitting particle filter can reduce your exposure.
  • If cold, dry air triggers your symptoms, a close-fitting mask may help by warming and humidifying the air you breathe.
  • If ozone or chemical fumes are the problem, a normal particle filter is not the answer.
  • If the trigger is exercise, stress or another non-particle trigger, the mask may not address the underlying cause.

And even when a mask can help, it works best as part of a bigger plan. Check air-quality conditions, avoid unnecessary exposure when pollution is high, improve indoor air where possible, and continue following the asthma management plan from your healthcare professional.

If you know that traffic pollution, smoke or airborne particles make your asthma worse, a particle-filtering mask can be one practical way to reduce exposure when you cannot avoid being outside.

  1. Thank you JM for your comment. Indeed medication is necessary during an attack. Yet it would be great if more asthmatic take preventive action to avoid being triggered.

  2. This is an interesting article. One of the better ways to manage this condition is to prevent asthma from being triggered. Though in cases that the attack has already been triggered, the people would have to resort to medications. Nonetheless, prevention would still be a better option.
