The SuperCool mask is great–hands down. I don’t work for Totobobo–nor am I paid to say this, and I’ve been using this mask for a few months now. I breathe in through my mouth, which is in the mask/filter, and out through my nose.
When I need to talk to other cyclists, I simply pull the mask down around my chin, then pull it back up when I ride on. The straps are very stretchy.
Since I am no longer exhaling into the mask, the fogging glasses issue has completely disappeared. Actually, I think I get a better seal with this smaller mask than I did the full one. And I find there is much less condensation collecting in the mask (no humid exhale within the mask), which means I do not need to wash the mask as often.

Big props to the company–who has seemed to design a great, simple product–and whose customer service has been very responsive and helpful. When I change out the filters they are visibly discolored–and I’m glad that at least some of that stuff that I otherwise would be breathing (dirt, pollution, particulate matter, brake shoe dust, etc.) is in the filter instead of in my lungs.

...After wearing the Totobobo mask, I honestly feel a discernible difference between the Totobobo and other lesser masks I have worn. In short, the bottom line is the way I felt during and after the ride, as well as the before and after shots of the filter. While we do not have access to technology that assesses filter effectiveness on a chemical/molecular level, the mask seemed to perform as it was intended to perform. Overall, the performance was solid, and is an excellent choice for those concerned about air quality...

I have been useing my totobobo mask lately. it rocks. i use the densest filter and it a little hard to breath thru on really steep hills or exertions. kinda like your 5,000 feet higher than you are. but the fact that you are breathing completely clean air makes it better. its one of the only masks that does that. it screens out every kind of pollutant and germs/bacterias. My lungs feel great and no weezing like i would if i was breathing all that yukky smog and car exhaust. you have to make sure you get the straps just right. one going up high and one low to keep it in place as your breathing gets going.

"The TOTOBOBO masks came in very useful in India! We’ve tested the masks in Delhi, the Indian countryside and Calcutta. The masks were comfortable for an hour or two, when we used them longer periods of cycling they were ok but started to get wet inside (especially that it was very hot here) and became less comfortable. But that’s still preferable to breathing the air of Calcutta or most other Indian cities."

"Attached a photo of the filters after 6 hours’ use in Delhi, Calcutta, the Indian countryside and Bangkok. The countryside one was especially shocking – even far from cities and factories the air is very polluted."

Testing Totobobo mask in Vietnam
"I had a chance to use the Totobobo mask during my recent bicycle tour of Vietnam. Weighing just 20g, the mask is both lightweight and compact, making it easy to pack. It is made of soft plastic and doesn’t absorb sweat or moisture and is easy to keep clean. The soft plastic conformed well to the shape of my face, creating a good seal that is needed for the mask to be effective. Once in place, it is also very comfortable, and breathing resistance is very low. The replaceable filters are electro-static charged and filters out very fine particles (0.3 micron or even smaller)."

I appreciate having more of my face and my nose out of the mask when I ride around Bangkok in the heat.
My wife tried to create her own earloop on her original mask and she likes the new model. The only suggestion she would make for the earloop mask is to have a mechanism to adjust the length of the string and hold it better in place. The only suggestion she would make for the earloop mask is to have a mechanism to adjust the length of the string and hold it better in place. We also like the little blue bags to carry our masks when we're not wearing them.

Nagaraj Pudukotai, urban cyclist, Bangalore, India Totobobo Mask - what I like:

1. Simple and largely effective design. What I mean by that is, the mask is not complicated but at the same time forms an very good seal on your face and nose thereby cuttting out a lot of crap (essentially sub micron particulate matter) which otherwise you would breathe.
There is no other mask made in India (A.F.A.I.K) which does this. The important thing is a mask should form a very tight seal for it to start being useful. The filters on the totobobo mask do a very good job. Claire mask in this regard is a piece of crap, essentially for me it has no design at all. Probably it is the best known mask of Indian make.

2. totobobo is light weight so almost don't feel its weight on your face.

3. The breathing resistance you experience (versus say Respro) is very little. Which means your efficiency of riding/breathing is largely not affected by it.

4. It is cheap (versus Respro), the filters are very cheap (versus Respro). This is with a caveat, see more of my review to understand what I mean by this.

5. Last but not the least, Rohan (BOTS) will sell the filters when I run out of my stock.

Totobobo mask - what I DON'T like

1. It takes a little bit of time (you need to ride with it a few times) to get the fit right from the perspective of avoiding condensation (big time) inside the mask. What I mean by this is, the only way what you breathe out gets out of the mask is through the boundary of the mask with your facial skin. This happens if you wear the mask tight enough (but not too tight) so that the pressure built up in the mask from your exhaust pushes the mask out just enough from the skin so that the exhaust escapes out and hence water vapour (and hence condesation) does not build up inside the mask. If you wear it a little too loose, then you defeat the very purpose of wearing it.

2. The filters get dirty (they turn black) with about 3 to 4 hours of usage in Bangalore. This means I am not sure if this can be used as a signal to change the filters, so Francis your comments are welcome here. Assuming it is a signal enough, then the filters need to be changed probably once or even twice a week for regular commuters like me.

3. The ties on the mask which hold them onto your face are a little flimsy and not very convenient to adjust to your face. A strap and a velcro mechanism (like Respro) would have been far more effective. The current ties as they are DO WORK, please don't get me wrong. It seems very unobtrusive compared to the others.

I opened the package to find the plastic mask already fitted with filters and a supply of extra filters. The first thing I noticed was what looked like a delicate head strap. After a closer look it is actually quite durable. It's obviously made from some high tech plastic. The strap is a single loop that goes around your neck through the mask and then over your head. There is a small clip that allows the mask to be tightened for a good seal. Because the strap is so thin it is very comfortable.

The body of the mask is also made from a transparent plastic. The transparency is actually a feature. When you put the mask on your face you can look in a mirror and see through the mask. This lets you see the seal where the mask contacts your face. The body of the mask is made to be trimmed for a perfect fit. A good seal is very important for dust masks. This one seals very well. In my opinion it is easier to get a good seal with the Totobobo than the Dust Bee Gone.

It's also important that a dust mask be comfortable or you are less likely to wear it. The Totobobo might be slightly less comfortable than the Dust Bee Gone but not by much. After you get it trimmed the comfort is very good compared to most non-fitted masks on the market. I wore the mask for nearly an hour with no serious discomfort. The plastic body of the mask is very soft and feels good against your face. Breathing felt natural and like the Dust Bee Gone I had no fogging of my glasses. If you wear glasses and have worn other masks you will probably know how much trouble fogging is. The Totobobo and the Dust Bee Gone do a great job in this area.

“So far I like this mask. This will probably be my go to mask for emptying my dust collector. I get a large amount of dust in the air during the process and this mask seals better than my Dust Be Gone. If it filters the dust as well as I think it will then I might give this mask a slight edge over the Dust Bee Gone.”

Totobobo is the most efficient, least expensive, most comfortable dust mask I have ever used."

"Wood turning has been my hobby for over 30 years but for some time now I have been concerned with a safety issue inherent with our hobby, dust. The older I got the more I noticed that after a day at the lathe without some sort of protection I developed a bad sinus headache. I figured if it was getting up my nose it was also getting into my lungs. I do several things in my own shop to keep my lungs safe but nothing is as important as wearing a good dust mask.

After a lot of trial and error I started using a rubber face mask with disposable filters. It wasn't too expensive but it was heavy, hot, and not comfortable.

Three months ago I stumbled on a new light weight inexpensive mask (TOTOBOBO) on the Internet. I talked to the manufacturer and discussed my particular needs and agreed to give them a try. After using them for several months I am convinced they are the most efficient, least expensive, most comfortable dust mask I have ever used."

"Bob Edwards is a friend of mine. He lives in Texas and I live in Louisiana, but we meet about once a year at a woodturning symposium. Two years ago he gave me one of the totobobo masks. I had not used it until my powered respirator had problems and I had some turning that I had to get done. I really liked it because, as others have said, breathing through it is easy. It seals well and is very effective. I liked how comfortable it was, and I could use it easily while wearing my glasses. Thanks for a great product!"

"The TOTOBOBO mask is very comfortable. Because the material is flexible and clingy, it’s easy to get a good seal. It’s easy to feel the negative pressure while breathing – unlike some other masks the back pressure is not noticeable. I think this contributes to the quality of the seal–less pressure, less leakage."

I like the collapsible form of the mask. It can be kept in a pocket with no damage. Also the replaceable filters are small. That way you can have extra capacity without carrying complete masks.

Wearing Totobobo mask while making pastel art.

Protecting my lungs from the airborne pastel dust is serious business. I’ve tried heavy ventilators and they don’t fit my small featured face. I’ve tried 3M, and a few other disposable face masks, but it seemed like they were not protecting me enough. For my own health I searched high and low for a small, comfortable, and highly effective filter and found another pastel artist, Paula Ford using a Totobobo. Artist’s are always at risk by their mediums, especially soft pastel dust! I wanted to bring this up because recently my favorite online blogger friend Loriann underwent lung surgery and so I wanted her to see that she too, can continue working in pastel! I still have to gently wipe up any remaining dust with a damp rag to keep from getting airborne. I’m not sponsored by Totobobo, but I certainly do encourage pastel artists to check them out for their own health. ________________________________

Using Totobobo mask, pastel artist, Paul Ford
Paula posted her experience of "Using a Mask for my Health!" in WetCanvas forum:

"For the last couple of months I've been having a hard breathing after painting. I don't think I was blowing on my work, but was tapping the excess pastel into the trash every few minutes. Well, it was getting into the air so much, by the end of the night of painting, I could hardly breathe, and my eyes have been running, red and itchy all the time whether I'm painting or not.
So, I did a search for "masks" and decided, after much research and trial and error with other masks that I bought at Lowes or WalMart, that I'd purchase the Totobobo mask. I just feel strongly about what I am about to tell you. This mask may have saved my life. First, the mask is made out of a rubbery material, so it sticks naturally to your skin. It is a bit tricky to learn how to put it on, but once you've got it, you've got it. Since I found the perfect position on my face for my mask, I no longer have any problems with breathing...at all...period. My nose has cleared up, my eyes are no longer irritated, I don't cough or sneeze at all any more. It's comfortable and it DOESN'T fog my glasses! I hardly know I'm wearing it! I feel it has given me the freedom to continue using my pastels.

Paula,
I also have this mask, and it is very comfortable. The only thing you need to do is change out the filters now and then. As it's plastic it is also washable, and I check the website they are antibacterial as well (handy to have in a flu epidemic). I am not affiliated with this company either.

Hi Paula, I'm so glad the totbobo mask is working for you. I've had great luck with it also. Here's a photo of the mask. It's very light weight and comfortable (after you cut it to fit your face -- not hard to do).

Don Ketchek, Wet Canvas forum guide, pastel artist pastel drawing of Don, a Totobobo mask user

Don shared his review on Totobobo mask The first thing I noticed was that there seemed to be more air coming through the Totobobo mask than the previous mask that I have been using. In fact, I took the mask off to check and make sure the filters were in place, because there was no noticeable decrease in air flow! (Yes, the filters were in place!) The mask seems lighter, too.

The straps were also more comfortable, and even better, they are adjustable. You can tighten or loosen them with a little clip that is attached to the strap.

The mask seems to do a fine job – no coughing or clearing my throat after working with the pastels.

One of the nice things about it is that the filters detach and are replaceable, so the mask itself is more environmentally friendly. You only throw the filters away – not the entire mask. The filters will probably last a good long time, I guess I don’t know how long yet! I’ve used it twice and the filters aren’t dirty at all.

I definitely recommend this mask. I know many of you are hesitant about wearing a mask, and believe me, so was I. In fact, I pretty much had to give up pastels for about 20 years, only doing them occasionally and then stopping due to coughing issues. Finally, I decided that using a mask was something I could get used to – and I did. I think it would have been an easier decision if this mask had been available then. It seems very unobtrusive compared to the others.

Pollution Masks: Which Are Best? Consider Totobobo…
Totobobo didn’t pay me anything, and I get no income from them for this mention. I’m simply trying to find well-researched options to protect myself and anyone else from Beijing’s air pollution, and I’d be more than happy to review other masks as well and to publish the results. Last year I tried to find good studies on other brands, including Respro, but I found no well-designed studies on other masks. Does anyone have such information?

I think Totobobo is a good and affordable option for people. And a 135-fold drop in pollution is very impressive; even on an emergency day with the AQI over 500, the mask would bring your air to WHO-safe levels.

Respro Vs Totobobo: Who’s The Winner?
So I think 88% real-world is pretty darn good. But if you reread my Totobobo piece, a randomized controlled cross-over study showed a “median (interquartile range) 135-fold reduction in airborne particle counts” with Totobobo masks in a real-world setting in 22 healthy subjects. So real-world testing clearly shows Totobobo is more effective than Respro. I also much prefer Totobobo due to better pricing and also because it’s much less extreme-looking than the Respro series.

I am a doctor /physician in the UK at UCL, and bike daily in london to work using totobobo mask. I also suffer from asthma using a ventolin inhaler. I have been using totobobo masks since feb 2010 when I placed my first order and find them very useful. My cycling performance with regard to speed of cycling has improved. Previously I might cycle 6 miles in 1 hour. Now I cycle 6 miles in 50 minutes. Totobobo mask helps improve my control of asthma. Asthma is a disease of airway hyper-responsivesness. The tracheal airways are hyper-responsive to various triggers. Pollutants in the air as in inner city london can trigger the airways to constrict or narrow. Totobobo masks prevent these pollutants reaching the airways and so help remove the “trigger” for asthma.

Kayla, young girl with cancer, Totobobo mask help her to avoid common flu in crowded area

Dabbie's daughter Kayla was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She is now cancer free.

Dabbie wrote to us said: Your mask is the ONLY mask that fits the way a mask should. It is also the most economical product on the market. The other masks are hot, poorly fitted and have to be replaced repeatedly. I love your product and keep one of the masks in my purse, in case it is needed for Kayla. I am never without it.
"Kayla has worn the Totobobo mask every day since January 2009 and she has not been sick in any way since that time. She attends school every day and no sickness. This despite still being immune compromised. The doctors said that her immune system will not recover from the chemo for another six months. Your mask is our safety net that has proven for us its workability. When Kayla did not have the mask and went to school she ended up in the hospital for two weeks, every month, for three months, totaling 45 days. With the mask -no sickness, no hospitalizations, no colds, nothing. Your mask is far superior to any other mask on the market. Period!"

"One day I went to Kayla's school and it seemed as if all the kids were sniffling and coughing. This was during Flu season. As usual because of your mask, Kayla stayed healthy the whole time!"

"I wish we knew about your mask last winter (2008) because Kayla got the flu from another patient in the hospital. I just was not prepared. This was a lesson for us."

From Flyjin.com

At any rate, if you did want to wear a mask, the type the Japanese wear are not very confidence inspiring. The air seems to come in and out through the sides or top, rather than go through the cloth. An alternative would be a proper respirator, but you end up looking like a fool, or an al-Qaeda member.
The best solution in my opinion is the innovative Totobobo mask from Singapore’s Dream Lab One. These are popular among expat bicycle commuters in Beijing, Bangkok, and other air quality-challenged Asian cities. Totobo’s mask are available in three sizes and can be customized with a pair of scissors to fit the face size and shape of children from age 5 to adult, with a tight seal. They are see-through, friendly looking and non-intimidating, and use replacable filter packs. Around-the-head and earloop versions are available. The Totobobo mask was favorably tested against the 3M N95 mask by the Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong.
